The Past Week

We've been working on getting things ready for Abraham since my last post. The size small diapers are washed and ready. The bassinet and crib have been set up. We will be finishing up painting our living room Saturday. We also have a dresser to prime and paint. I'd like to go to the craft store and see if I can find some stencils that match the bedding for a cute finish to the dresser.

We had our last prepared childbirth class on Tuesday and I feel like I'm as prepared as one can be. We talked to the instructor after class and she gave us the names of some of the midwives she has assisted. It's good to know that there are some reputable, experienced ones in town. When I got pregnant, I could only find one midwife and she had only assisted in a few births, so we weren't all that comfortable going to her. The ladies on our new list all have many years of experience. Our teacher was wonderful and very dedicated. She really stressed that the natural way is best and childbirth is nothing to fear. It's a shame none of the other couples took the class seriously or acted like they even wanted to be there. They were all too busy making fun of the people actually doing the breathing techniques, mainly the instructor and me. Anyone about to have a child should realize it's time to grow up. This isn't high school anymore. If their behavior is any indication, they're going to be poor excuses for parents.

I been pretty sick since the doctor put me on iron supplements. I've tried taking them with orange juice or food, but nothing seems to help. I'm open to any suggestions to make taking them easier.

Back to Joplin

I got my test results back and everything looks great. I'm so relieved that I don't have diabetes!

We'll be going to Joplin for a long weekend this afternoon. It will be our last trip before the baby is born. I'm sad that I won't get to see my family for so long, but I'm hoping they will get to come and meet Abraham when he is born. =) It really all depends on the weather. My Aunt is throwing a shower for us on Saturday. She's such a sweetheart! We plan to be back Monday evening.

A long week

Well, we made it to the new doctor on Monday. She was really nice and has a great bedside manner. She assured me that we will get to know each other well before the birth, so it won't feel like a stranger is delivering our baby. I got a call from the office on Tuesday to inform me that I had failed my one hour glucose test, so we went back yesterday and did the three hour test. I'm waiting for them to call with my results. I'm praying it was a fluke in the test, but it I know it will all be OK if I am diabetic. God has blessed us with Abraham and I have faith He will keep both of us healthy.

We had a prepared childbirth class on Tuesday night and breastfeeding class last night. The childbirth classes are going great. I'm learning a lot of relaxation exercises and how to labor as comfortable as possible. As for the breastfeeding class, the lactation consultant made me glad we will be switching hospitals. She kept referring to our babies as mammals, and said it would be fine to feed the baby after drinking alcohol. As many as seven glasses of wine on your first night out wouldn't be harmful. Seriously!? She said she'd went as far as drinking beer to see if it would help her produce more milk. Shockingly, it didn't. One of the women in the class wanted to know if it was a myth that breastfeeding would help with spacing children. She told her it would keep you from becoming pregnant for about six months if done right, but a tubaligation works much better. I do think that I got the information I needed, but we were so ready to get out of there by the time class ended.

Changing Doctors

When we got home Monday evening I had two letters in the mail from my doctor stating she was taking an immediate unscheduled leave of absence. Not something I wanted to hear at 28 weeks along! The letters were dated a week before the actual postmark dates, so I'm wondering what took them so long to finally mail them. Of course, the fill-in for her is a man, so I called to let the office know I would be finding a new doctor. They preceded to tell me to "just hang in there," that I would only have to see this fill-in once. He was actually a fill-in for another fill-in, also a man by the way. Is that supposed to make me want to stay? Well, this all turned out to be a blessing. Chris works at a hospital and his boss has quite a bit of pull. We've been fortunate enough to be accepted by a doctor we never thought we'd have an opportunity to see. She's on many "Best Doctors of Arkansas" lists. Her practice also includes four other women and they have already noted that I am to be seen by one of them if she isn't available. I have my first appointment on Monday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Many people think I'm crazy for insisting on seeing a female OB/GYN. However, I think it's crazy not to. Please give it some thought.

Back from a long vacation

We went to Joplin last Tuesday and returned late last night. My mom and dad were in the process of moving, and Chris wanted to help out. He's totally sweet like that. =) The house they moved into is so cute. It's exactly the kind of house we would love to have. It's a smaller three bedroom and I'd guess it's around 1000 sq feet. Too "tiny" for most people to even consider, but we never want a McMansion, even if we could afford one someday. We just prefer a small, cozy home. Less is more sometimes. This particular house is within walking distance of many stores, restaurants, and other businesses as well my dad's work. It's also in a nice and quite neighborhood with a large fenced back yard that would be great for children. I'll have to take some pictures next time we're there. I got to spend Wednesday with my three year old niece, she is such a doll. She just can't wait until the baby gets here, she's ready to meet him. She also requested that we pray for a girl next time. How cute is that? I really enjoy getting visit with my family. Time always seem to go by way too fast when we're there though.
