The Past Week

We've been working on getting things ready for Abraham since my last post. The size small diapers are washed and ready. The bassinet and crib have been set up. We will be finishing up painting our living room Saturday. We also have a dresser to prime and paint. I'd like to go to the craft store and see if I can find some stencils that match the bedding for a cute finish to the dresser.

We had our last prepared childbirth class on Tuesday and I feel like I'm as prepared as one can be. We talked to the instructor after class and she gave us the names of some of the midwives she has assisted. It's good to know that there are some reputable, experienced ones in town. When I got pregnant, I could only find one midwife and she had only assisted in a few births, so we weren't all that comfortable going to her. The ladies on our new list all have many years of experience. Our teacher was wonderful and very dedicated. She really stressed that the natural way is best and childbirth is nothing to fear. It's a shame none of the other couples took the class seriously or acted like they even wanted to be there. They were all too busy making fun of the people actually doing the breathing techniques, mainly the instructor and me. Anyone about to have a child should realize it's time to grow up. This isn't high school anymore. If their behavior is any indication, they're going to be poor excuses for parents.

I been pretty sick since the doctor put me on iron supplements. I've tried taking them with orange juice or food, but nothing seems to help. I'm open to any suggestions to make taking them easier.

Our size small diaper stash:

The bassinet (I think it's the cutest)

Hey does your bassinet have a co-sleeper? It just looked like it did. Have you read Zsuzsanna blog on the recall on a certain type of bassinet?

As I read your blog I remembered what it was like having the first baby. Everything had to be just right. Please enjoy your baby they don't stay that way long.

What problem are you having with the iron tablet?

Just a quick note on the iron: most moms get sick from the supplements because they are synthetic, so your body only absorbs about 10% of them, hence the dose is huge and you end up sick (and often constipated).

I use a 100% food-based liquid extract called "Floradex", which is absorbed 100% and raises your iron levels drastically within just a couple of days. You can find it at health food stores, a bottle is about $25. I won't say it tastes good, because it tastes like drinking pure blood. But I just plug my nose and then chase it with some orange juice.

Good luck!

Nikki,
The bassinet doesn't have a co-sleeper. Thanks for asking, I sure wouldn't want to use one of those.
When I take my iron supplement it only stays down for about five minutes, then I belch it all day long. It's just really gross.

Zsuzsanna,
Thanks for the advice I'll look into the Floradex. Is it something you have to take it for the duration of your pregnancy?

I take the iron as needed, i.e. if my iron levels get low I take the full dose for a week or two until they are back where they should be. I also take it late in pregnancy to have my iron levels very high for the birth (because of the blood loss).
